Chùa Hương ( Nguyễn Nhược Pháp) - The Hương Pagoda ( Hương Cau Cao Tân)

Chùa Hương - Nguyễn Nhược Pháp

Hôm nay đi chùa Hương
Hoa cỏ mờ hơi sương
Cùng thầy me em dậy
Em vấn đầu soi gương

Khăn nhỏ đuôi gà cao
Em đeo giải yếm đào
Quần lĩnh áo the mới
Tay cầm nón quai thao

Me cười, “Thầy nó trông
Chân đi đôi giép cong
Con tôi xinh xinh quá
Bao giờ cô lấy chồng?”

Em tuy mới mười lăm
Mà đã lắm người thăm
Nhờ mối mai đưa tiếng
Khen tươi như trăng rằm

Nhưng em chưa lấy ai
Vì thầy bảo người mai
Rằng em còn bé lắm
Ý đợi người tài trai

Em đi cùng với me
Me em ngồi cáng tre
Thầy theo sau cưỡi ngựa
Thắt lưng dài đỏ hoe

Thầy me ra đi đò
Thuyền mấp-mênh bên bờ
Em nhìn sông nước chảy
Đưa cánh buồm lô-nhô

Mơ xa lại nghĩ gần
Đời mấy kẻ tri-âm
Thuyền nan vừa nhẹ lướt
Em thấy một văn-nhân

Người đâu thanh lạ thường
Tướng mạo trông phi-thường
Lưng cao, dài, trán rộng
Hỏi ai nhìn không thương

Chàng ngồi bên me em
Me hỏi chuyện làm quen
“Thưa thầy, đi chùa ạ
Thuyền đông, giời ơi chen!”

Chàng thưa vâng thuyền đông
Rồi ngắm trời mênh mông
Xa xa mờ núi biếc
Phơn phớt áng mây hồng

Giòng sông nước đục lờ
Ngân-nga chàng đọc thơ
Thầy khen hay hay quá
Em nghe rồi ngẩn-ngơ

Thuyền đi bến Đục qua,
Mỗi lúc gặp người ra,
Thẹn-thùng em không nói:
“Nam mô A-di đà!”

Réo-rắt suối đưa quanh
Ven bờ ngọn núi xanh,
Nhịp cầu xa nho-nhỏ
Cảnh đẹp gần như tranh.

Sau núi Oản, Gà, Xôi,
Bao nhiêu là khỉ ngồi
Tới núi con voi phục,
Có đủ cả đầu đuôi.

Chùa lấp sau rừng cây
(Thuyền ta đi một ngày)
Lên cửa chùa em thấy
Hơn một trăm ăn mày

Em đi, chàng theo sau,
Em không dám đi mau
Ngại chàng chê hấp-tấp,
Số gian-nan không giàu.

Thầy me đến điện thờ
Trầm hương khói tỏa mờ
Hương như là sao lạc
Lớp sóng người lô-nhô

Chen vào thật lắm công
Thầy me em lễ xong
Quay về nhà ngang bảo:
“Mai ta vào chùa trong”

Chàng hai má đỏ hồng
Kêu với thằng tiểu đồng
Mang túi thơ bầu rượu:
“Mai ta vào chùa trong”

Đêm hôm ấy em mừng!
Mùi trầm hương bay lừng.
Em nằm nghe tiếng mõ,
Rồi chim kêu trong rừng.

Em mơ, em yêu đời
Mơ nhiều...biết thế thôi
Kẻo ai mà trông thấy
Nhìn em đến nực cười

Em chưa tỉnh giấc nồng
Mây núi đã pha hồng
Thầy me em sắp-sửa
Vàng hương vào chùa trong

Đường mây đá cheo-leo
Hoa đỏ, tím, vàng leo
Vì thương me quá mệt
Săn-sóc chàng đi theo.

Me bảo: “Đường còn lâu
Cứ vừa đi ta cầu
Quan-thế-âm Bồ-tát
Là tha hồ đi mau.”

Em ư? Em không cầu
Đường vẫn thấy đi mau
Chàng cũng cho như thế,
(Ra ta hợp tâm đầu)

Khi qua chùa Giải Oan
Trông thấy bức tường ngang
Chàng đưa tay lẹ bút
Thảo bài thơ liên hoàn

Tấm-tắc thầy khen hay
Chữ đẹp như rồng bay
(Bài thơ này em nhớ
Nên chả chép vào đây)

Ồ! Chùa Trong đây rồi
Động thẳm bóng xanh ngời
Đá rêu trần thạch nhũ
Động nhuốm hương trầm rơi

Me vui mừng hả-hê

The Hương Pagoda by Nguyễn Nhược Pháp

Today we go to the Huong’s Pagoda as planned
While the faint dew on the flowers and leaves is condensed
Together with my parents, I wake up feeling well
Doing my hair, looking into the mirror at myself

Tying my pony tail hairdo with a small scarf at its best
I am wearing a pink brassiere tightly on my chest
Together with silk trousers and a new silk gauze dress
And holding in my hands, a wide brim fringed hat

My mother smiles and says, “Husband, take a look at the girl
Who is wearing a pair of shoes with the tips that are curled
My daughter, you do look so beautiful, that’s splendid
Tell me, when can we give you away in marriage?”

Although I am still very young, fifteen years at the most
My parents have, for so many times, to play the role of hosts
For parties the matchmakers of those all praise me in one tune
That I am as beautiful and fresh as a bright full moon

But I have not agreed to take any of the men as husband
Because my father tells them when he is asked the same question
That his daughter is still little and not yet at the age of maturity
She probably waits, I guess, for the right talented bridegroom-to-be

When I go, my mother always goes with me too
She sits on a roofed hammock made of bamboo
My father rides a horse behind in a short distance
Wearing at his waist, a bright long sash in crimson

My parents dismount to continue the trip by boat
The boat is riding the waves unstably along the coast
I am watching the river flowing in its usual might
Showing on the horizon are boats’ sails at uneven heights

Daydreaming, letting my mind wandering now and then
How many chances you can have to have a soulmate friend
When our bamboo boat is just about to smoothly depart
I spot a man whose appearance is so pleasing to my heart

What a man who looks so handsome, so elegant
He who has a face so extraordinary in appearance
With his long back, and wide forehead in his countenance
Who can’t help but falling in love with such a person

He sits down at a spot nearest to where my mother sits
My mother strikes a conversation to break the ice a bit
“Young teacher, you are going to the pagoda, are you not?
In this crowded boat, it’s really hard to find a spot!”

“Yes, it is crowded” is my idol’s soft, loving reply
He then looks around, regarding the high above sky
In the distant, the mountains look blurry and greenish
And high up in the sky, the clouds appear a little pinkish

The river’s water looks quite safe and opaquely muddy
He starts reciting his memorized poems so melodiously
Having listened intently, my father is enthusiastic in his praising
I remain sitting, feeling stupefied by his lovely reciting

The boat keeps going and is passing the Port of Muddy
We come across some people who apparently know me
Feeling really shy, I cannot even mumble the familiar sutra
The too familiar praying sutra of “Namo Amida Buddha”

The melodious sound of water from a winding brook in the distant
Which hugs the rim of a lofty blue mountain
Adorned by the span of a small bridge quietly crossing over
Everything looks as beautiful as if in a picture

After the Mountains of Cone Cake, Chicken, and Cooked Sticky Rice
We see so many monkeys sitting in the trees nearby
Reaching the Mountain of the Kneeling Elephant, seeming at rest,
Which has a bulky head and even a tail in completeness

The pagoda’s reflection flickers behind the trees far away
(The time it takes our boat to reach it is almost one day)
On reaching the temple’s gate, right at it and nearby
I see probably more than a hundred beggars, what a sight!

I am walking ahead, and he is following right behind
I dare not to walk fast, and keep my speed just right
Because deep down in my heart, I am afraid he will think of me
As a hurried girl, who is destined to live a poor life in poverty

My father and mother come to the main worshipping hall
The smoke from scented wood seems to blur everything it falls
The burning incense dotted the scene like lost stars in despair
Above a sea of people of uneven heights, moving in from everywhere

To get inside, it surely will make you sweat and work very hard
My father and mother, having finished their ceremony part
Returning to the guests’ quarter, telling me what I need to know
“The Temple of the Inner Hall is the place we will reach tomorrow”

My man, with handsome face and cheeks have turned crimson in colour
Calls out to the servant who has served as his personal porter
Carrying his poem books and wine, to say what the porter already knows
“The Temple of the Inner Hall is the place we will reach tomorrow...”

That night, I go to sleep but can only lie down, am as happy as I can be
The smell of scented wood is everywhere, just a bit too heavily
And I listen intently to the sound of wooden bells through the night
And the sounds of chattering birds in the far forest behind.

I become dreaming, I feel there is something in life worthy to love
I dream a lot about so many things... that’s all I dare to know
If anyone can see me in the state I am in right now
They probably even think I am acting as silly as a clown

I have not enjoyed the sleep I deserve after a long hard day
The clouds covering the mountain have turned pinkish by the sunrays
My father and mother are preparing the offerings, as you recall
To go on a trip to worship at the Temple of the Inner Hall

The road includes beetling cliffs high up into the clouds
With red, purple, yellow flowers of the climbing plants all around
Touched by my mother’s efforts, producing constant tiredness
My idol volunteers to come along to care for her, out of his kindness

My mother says, “Because the road is still long for the day
To shorten it, we can walk while continue to chant, or pray
Evoking the magic of the Goddess of Mercy Bodhisattva
Then you see, strangely, that you can go very far.”

If you’re asking me, I would not have the need to pray
The distance I have covered seems a lot for the day
He totally agrees that the going is progressing so fine,
(Here we go again, “Great minds always think alike!”)

While we are passing the Pagoda of Exculpation’s land
On seeing a long wall built alongside the fence
He quickly executes the writing of poem lines in succession
Displaying his talents in calligraphy as well as in poem composition

Chuckling and praising while watching him write
My father commends the writing which looks like a dragon in flight
(Because I have memorized and remembered this serial poem by heart
I would not bother writing in here any of its parts)

Oh! Here we are at the Temple of the Inner Hall
In the cave so deep, and the blue reflections on the wall
The stones are mossy, with the stalactites on the ceiling
The cave smells of the fragrance of scented wood in free floating

My mother is now overwhelmed with the joy of the day
She chuckles and comments, “We finish it, such a long way!”
My father calls out: “Please be quick, because we are leaving soon,
The latest we have to go back is today, in the afternoon.”

Hearing this, I feel like I am going to suddenly faint
Words are choked in my mouth; I look at him in vain!
Happy times in life are short-lived, and seem ready to fly
In a flash, happy days are very quick in passing by!

Feeling the wind blowing softly on my rosy cheeks
I listen to my dress flap waving, feeling I am getting sick
I search earnestly, my love, for your attractive breathing
Do you know, do you care, or are you listening?

This cloudy road leads upward, probably heaven bound
Let us walk, shoulder to shoulder, smiling at each other now
We love each other, our love will last forever!
Haste, haste, let’s get going, be quick, my dear lover!

From the altar, the smoke of the yellow incense is spiraling
I am now intoxicated by and from my golden daydreaming
I earnestly pray to the magnificent Buddha and lofty Heaven
To fulfill my request of having him as my lovely husband.

(The diary ends here. I believe that they will have each other as husband and
wife, because if her prayers are not answered then she would write some
more. If they get married, so ends the story.)

Sang Thu ( Kim Phượng) - Coming Autumn - ( Hương Cau Cao Tân)

Sang Thu

Gió se se lạnh hẳn thu về
Mây hạ bàng hoàng ngắm mải mê
Phiến lá trở mình tô sắc thắm
Vàng lên lối mộng thuở vai kề

Ơi người hỏi nhỏ một câu này
Thu đã về đây đã ở đây
Biền biệt phương nao rằng có biết
Hỏi rồi má đỏ thẹn hây hây

Trăm nghìn đêm xuống lại chiêm bao
Văng vẳng hình như tiếng ngọt ngào
Trót gửi hồn mình vào với mộng
Say rồi thu hỡi biết làm sao

Coming Autumn

by Kim Phượng

The winds are getting chilly signifying that autumn is arriving certainly
As summer clouds are absorbingly admiring its coming so dazedly
Leaves are turning their bodies as if displaying their resplendent beauty
Shining the golden roads of the time of shoulders together were we to be

Hey, mate, let me ask you a little sentence quietly
That autumn has come back to stay here already
You are so distantly far away, would you know, dear
That having asked you, my cheeks have embarrassingly turned rosy here

Then hundreds of thousands of nights would be full of dreams
As there would be lightly echoing sounds of something sweet, it seems
And as I have mistakenly sent my soul to dreams that are so dreamy
O Autumn, what can I do now as I have been drunken so deeply

Sao Chẳng Về Đây ( Nguyễn Bính) - Why Do You Not Come Back Here (Hương Cau Cao Tân)

                 (Ảnh: Kim Phượng)

Sao Chẳng Về Đây

Lối đỏ như son tới xóm Dừa
Ngang cầu đã điểm hạt lưa-thưa,
(Xuân sang xao-xuyến lòng tôi quá)
Tôi đã xây tròn sự-nghiệp chưa?

Ở mãi kinh-kỳ với bút nghiên
Đêm đêm quán trọ thức thi đèn.
Làm thơ đem bán cho thiên-hạ,
Thiên-hạ đem thơ đọ với tiền.

Chẳng đợi mùa xuân vẫn cứ sang,
Phồn-hoa thôi hết mộng huy-hoàng.
Sớm nay sực tỉnh sầu đô-thị,
Tôi đã về đây rất vội-vàng

Ở đây vô-số những trời xanh,
Và một con sông chảy rất lành
Và những tâm-hồn nghe rất đẹp
Từng chung sống dưới mái nhà tranh.

Sao chẳng về đây múc nước sông,
Tưới cho những luống có hoa hồng,
Xuân sang hoa nụ rồi hoa nở,
Phô nhuỵ vàng hây với cánh nhung?

Sao chẳng về đây bắt bướm vàng,
Nhốt vào tay áo đợi thu sang,
Thả ra cho bướm xem hoa nở,
Cánh bướm vờn hoa loạn phấn hương.

Sao chẳng về đây có bạn hiền,
Có hương, có sắc, có thiên-nhiên,
Sống vào giản-dị, ra tươi-sáng.
Tìm thấy cho lòng một cảnh tiên?

Sao chẳng về đây lục tứ thơ,
Hỡi ơi, hồn biển rộng không bờ,
Chùm hoa sự-nghiệp thơm muôn thuở.
Thiên-hạ bao nhiêu kẻ đợi-chờ?

Sao chẳng về đây, nỡ lạc-loài
Giữa nơi thành-thị gió mưa phai,
Chết dần từng cả rồi mai mốt
Chết cả mùa xuân chết cả đời?

Xuân đã sang rồi em có hay,
Tình xuân chan-chứa, ý xuân đầy.
Kinh-kỳ bụi quá xuân không đến,
Sao chẳng về đây, chẳng ở đây?

Why Do You Not Come Back Here

by Nguyen Binh

The red road leading to the Village of Coconut over there
Crossing a bridge while it is drizzling somewhere
(My heart flutters because of the coming of spring freshness)
Have I achieved any of life’s normal success?

I have been staying in the city, busy with writings and compositions
Staying up late at night, the lamps and I are in competition.
I compose poems and sell them to people for a few bucks,
They compare poems with money and say they are not worth that much.

Without being expected, Spring is still coming over
Ending cosmopolitan life, fancy dreams are now over.
Awaken this morning from the city blue slumber
I have come back here in the fastest hour.

Here the sky is as blue as the ocean
And a river the current of which is without turbulence
With many wholesome hearts, the beauty of life
Who have lived together under the same thatched hut for a while.

Why don’t you come back here to carry some river water
To sprinkle it onto rows of beautiful rose flowers,
So when spring comes the buds in bloom will look so gorgeous
Displaying yellow and velvet petals which are so precious?

Why don’t you come back here to catch yellow butterflies,
Hiding them in the sleeves, waiting for autumn to come in time,
Then release them so they can play with flowers in the open,
Their wings will then touch the petals and disturb the pollen.

Why don’t you come back here with friends of decency
With scents, with colours, with nature in its natural beauty,
With the marvels of simple in coming, shining in going.
Finding oneself in this world a piece of heavenly living?

Why don’t you come back here to find the poem inspiration
Alas, unlimited and shoreless is the soul of the vast ocean,
The flower bundle of career is forever sweet-smelling
With how many people in life are spending time in waiting?

Why don’t you come back here to break away from being lost in life
Drenched in the rain in the middle of the city so wide,
Where you lose certain part of your life, because it gradually dies
Next in dying are your spring time and even your whole life

Are you aware that spring is coming
Abundant and full in its beautiful meaning,
The cities are so dusty that spring wants to stay away,
Why don’t you come back here and stay here always?

Nàng Xuân ( Kim Phượng) - Lady of Spring ( Hương Cau Cao Tân)

Nàng Xuân

Ngày xuân ngan ngát hương hoa
Ngẩn xa áo lụa đôi tà thơ ngây
Mai vàng đính tóc xõa vai
Ngọc ngà tuổi mộng trăng đầy đoan trang
Tình dâng ý thắm mang mang
Bồi hồi dõi bước dịu dàng em đi
Hài thanh động gót xuân thì
Ngất ngây khơi động rèm mi hẹn thề
Lần theo dáng nhỏ chân quê
Đêm xuân thao thức chợt mê giấc nồng

Lady of Spring

by Kim Phượng

On a spring day, overwhelmingly pervading is the scent of flowers
As the two naïve flaps of silk dress from the distant are looking over
The ochna integerrima flowers are clinging on shoulder hair so lengthy
As your pearly dreamy age is full of correctness and decency
As love is implied in the rising of warm borne intentions
As I am following your pacing steps so tenderly in action
Your curled tipped shoes stir up the springiness time so lightly
That softly starts up the vowing eyelashes in somewhat ecstasy
As I am looking over following your tiny figure of peasantry plainness
And suddenly crave for a deep sleep in the spring night’s sleeplessness

Ta Về ( Tô Thùy Yên) - I Am Returning ( Hương Cau Cao Tân)

Ta về Tô Thùy Yên

Tiếng biển lời rừng nao nức giục
Ta về cho kịp độ xuân sang

Ta về - một bóng trên đường lớn
Thơ chẳng ai đề vạt áo phai...
Sao bỗng nghe đau mềm phế phủ?
Mười năm, đá cũng ngậm ngùi thay

Vĩnh biệt ta-mười-năm chết dấp,
Chốn rừng thiêng im tiếng nghìn thu
Mười năm, mặt xạm soi khe nước
Ta hóa thân thành vượn cổ sơ

Ta về qua những truông cùng phá
Nếp trán nhăn đùa ngọn gió may
Ta ngẩn ngơ trông trời đất cũ
Nghe tàn cát bụi tháng năm bay

Chỉ có thế. Trời câm đất nín
Đời im lìm đóng váng xanh xao
Mười năm, thế giới già trông thấy
Đất bạc màu đi, đất bạc màu...

Ta về như bóng chim qua trễ
Cho vội vàng thêm gió cuối mùa
Ai đứng trông vời mây nước đó
Ngàn năm râu tóc bạc phơ phơ

Một đời được mấy điều mong ước?
Núi lở sông bồi đã lắm khi...
Lịch sử ngơi đi nhiều tiếng động
Mười năm, cổ lục đã ai ghi?

Ta về cúi mái đầu sương điểm
Nghe nặng từ tâm lượng đất trời
Cảm ơn hoa đã vì ta nở
Thế giới vui từ mỗi lẻ loi

Tưởng tượng nhà nhà đang mở cửa
Làng ta, ngựa đá đã qua sông
Người đi như cá theo con nước
Trống ngũ liên nôn nả gióng mừng

Ta về như lá rơi về cội
Bếp lửa nhân quần ấm tối nay
Chút rượu hồng đây, xin rưới xuống
Giải oan cho cuộc biển dâu này

Ta khóc tạ ơn đời máu chảy
Ruột mềm như đá dưới chân ta
Mười năm chớp bể mưa nguồn đó
Người thức nghe buồn tận cõi xa

Ta về như hạt sương trên cỏ
Kết tụ sầu nhân thế chuyển dời
Bé bỏng cũng thì sinh, dị, diệt
Tội tình chi lắm nữa, người ơi!

Quán dốc hơi thu lùa nỗi nhớ
Mười năm, người tỏ mặt nhau đây
Nước non ngàn dặm, bèo mây hỡi
Đành uống lưng thôi bát nước mời

Ta về như sợi tơ trời trắng
Chấp chới trôi buồn với nắng hanh
Ai gọi ai đi ngoài quãng vắng?
Phải, ôi vàng đá nhắn quan san?

Lời thề truyền kiếp còn mang nặng
Nên mắc tình đời cởi chẳng ra
Ta nhớ người xa ngoài nỗi nhớ
Mười năm, ta vẫn cứ là ta

Ta về như tứ thơ xiêu tán
Trong cõi hoang đường trắng lãng quên
Nhà cũ, mừng còn nguyên mái, vách
Nhện giăng, khói ám, mối xông nền

Mọi thứ không còn ngăn nắp cũ
Nhà thương khó quá, sống thờ ơ
Giậu nghiêng cổng đổ, thềm um cỏ
Khách cũ không còn, khách mới thưa...

Ta về khai giải bùa thiêng yểm
Thức dậy đi nào, gỗ đá ơi!
Hãy kể lại mười năm mộng dữ
Một lần kể lại để rồi thôi

Chiều nay, ta sẽ đi thơ thẩn
Thăm hỏi từng cây những nỗi nhà
Hoa bưởi, hoa tầm xuân có nở?
Mười năm, cây có nhớ người xa?

Ta về như đứa con phung phá
Khánh kiệt đời trong cuộc biển dâu
Mười năm, con đã già như vậy
Huống mẹ cha, đèn sắp cạn dầu...

Con gẫm lại đời con thất bát
Hứa trăm điều, một chẳng làm nên
Đời qua, lớp lớp tàn hư huyễn
Hạt lệ sương thầm khóc biến thiên

Ta về như tiếng kêu đồng vọng
Rau mác lên bờ đã trổ bông
Cho dẫu ngàn năm, em vẫn đứng
Chờ anh như biển vẫn chờ sông

Ta gọi thời gian sau cánh cửa
Nỗi mừng ràn rụa mắt ai sâu
Ta nghe như máu ân tình chảy
Tự kiếp xưa nào tưởng lạc nhau

Ta về dẫu phải đi chân đất
Khắp thế gian này để gặp em
Đau khổ riêng gì nơi gió cát...
Hè nhà, bụi chuối thức thâu đêm

Cây bưởi xưa còn nhớ trắng hoa
Đêm chưa khuya lắm, hỡi trăng tà!
Tình xưa như tuổi già không ngủ
Bước chạm khua từng nỗi xót xa

Ta về như giấc mơ thần bí
Tuổi nhỏ đi tìm những tối vui
Trăng sáng lưu hồn ta vết phỏng
Trọn đời, nỗi nhớ sáng không nguôi

Bé ơi, này những vui buồn cũ
Hãy sống, đương đầu với lãng quên
Con dế vẫn là con dế ấy
Hát rong bờ cỏ, giọng thân quen

Ta về như nước tào khê chảy
Tinh đẩu mười năm luống nhạt mờ
Thân thích những ai giờ đã khuất?
Cõi đời nghe trống trải hơn xưa

Người chết đưa ta cùng xuống mộ
Đêm buồn, ai nữa đứng bờ ao
Khóc người, ta khóc ta rơi rụng
Tuổi hạc, ôi ngày một một hao

Ta về như bóng ma hờn tủi
Lục lại thời gian, kiếm chính mình
Ta nhặt mà thương từng phế liệu
Như từng hài cốt sắp vô danh

Ngồi đây, nền cũ nhà hương hoả
Đọc lại bài thơ buổi thiếu thời
Ai đó trong hồn ta thổn thức?
Vầng trăng còn tiếc cuộc rong chơi

Ta về như hạc vàng thương nhớ
Một thuở trần gian bay lướt qua
Ta tiếc đời ta sao hữu hạn
Đành không trải hết được lòng ta

I am returning by Tô Thùy Yên

Ocean voices and forest words are eagerly urging
I am returning to catch the moment of spring’s coming

When I am returning - just like a lone shadow in a vast road
Yet no one bothers writing poems on my fading coat ...
Why do I suddenly feel the pains of my lungs and intestines?
It’s been ten years, so even rocks could have pity in their mind

Good-bye, the one of I-of-ten-year, who died a covered up death
In sacred forests where his voice, for thousand autumns, could be at rest
For ten years, I have been seeing my sunburnt face in brooks’ water
Have transformed myself into a simple pliopithecus, the human former

I am returning passing by those moors and river tributaries
To feel the winds playing on the furrows of my forehead lightly
I will be contemplating the old heaven and earth astoundingly
And be listening to the dying dusts of the months and years so lightly

That is all there is. Heaven is dumb and earth keeps silent
And life is quietly accumulating a greenish film, it just so happens
It has been ten years, and the world is looking old conspicuously
The earth’s colour is fading slowly, the earth’s colour is fading slowly ...

I am returning like a shadow of a bird that is coming in late
So the ending seasonal winds are hurriedly moving in in haste
Who is the one that has been standing looking over at clouds and water
For thousands of years till the hair and beard become as white as silver

How many wishes can one be granted in a lifetime?
Mountains can move, rivers can deposit, yet there will not be a time ...
Many kinds of noises have been silenced in mankind’s history
It is only ten years, who cares to record it in books of ancient history?

I am returning with my salt-and-pepper head bending over slowly
Listening to the weighty merciful heart of Heaven and Earth’s generosity
I am grateful to flowers that have been blooming because of me
The world is joyful because of the accumulation of each thing individually

I imagine that house after house are opening their doors wide
Because a stone horse from our village has crossed the river all right
People gathered along the tracks like fish swimming along stream of water
While penta-serial drums are sounding urgently to celebrate the event ever

I am returning like a leaf falling down back to the root of the tree
Tonight warm would become the cooking fire of human community
Please kindly sprinkle some of this red wine into the burning fire
So to vindicate this change from oceans into mulberry fields with time

I am crying because of the humane care people have for others at times
When misfortune befalls others, like rocks under my feet, ready to provide
Ten years is a significant event like ocean’s lightning or source torrents
Making a watchful person feel the sorrow pervading far into the distance

I am retuning like a dewdrop lingering on a blade of tiny grass
Where the sorrow is condensed while the human life is going to pass
No matter how tiny it is, a life has the time to be born, grown, and spent
What is the point to accuse and torture others more, oh my man!

The shop on steep hill where autumn breath is blowing in the longing
It has been ten years; it’s now for face searching and clear looking
The distance is thousands of miles of mountains and rivers, o water fern
So I can only drink half of the inviting cup of water in my turn

I am returning like a heavenly cord that is so white
And is flying rolling and sadly flowing with the sunny and dry sunlight
Who is calling whom that is walking on this empty long distance?
That’s right, is it the loyal sending messages to frontiers and mountains?

The hereditary vows are still being remembered deeply
So the yoke of life’s love debts is stuck on me, I cannot be free
I miss the faraway person who is beyond the missing and the longing
Although it has been ten years, I still remain me in my being

I am returning feeling like my poem inspiration has been scattered wide
Into wild realm and ono forgotten roads that look so amazingly white
Staying in my old house, I am grateful to the surviving roof and partitions
Despite hanging spider webs, black soot, and termite eaten foundation

Everything is no longer having the same old loving order
I am in a poor and pitiful situation, living indifferently just to get over
Fences are slanting, gate slumping, on the ground, grass is fully covering
Old customers are gone, and new ones are slowly diminishing ...

I am returning to dissolve the curses of efficacious charms in oppressing
Hey there, wake up, friends, O my wood and my stone!
Please kindly retell the story of ten years of nightmares so frightening
Tell me the story just for once and then let them have their due ending

This afternoon I will be doing my dreamily strolling
And will be inquiring each and every plant about its private concerning
Be asking the grapefruit and briar rose flowers if they ever blossom
That it has been ten years; would they still remember the distant person?

I am returning feeling like a worthless squandering son
Whose life is bankrupted in the changing of mulberry fields into oceans
It has been ten years, I, your son, am getting old, and quite
Let alone my parents, they are like oil lamps that are getting dry ...

Reviewing my life, I find that mine is just the life of a loser
Out of a hundred promises I have made, not one is delivered
As my life is passing by, only layer upon layer of delusion
So much tear crying for the upheaval has been shed in silence

I am returning like a voice that has been resounding from afar
The blooming flowers on the banks are the ones of the centella
You will still be standing even for a period of one thousand years
Waiting for me patiently like the ocean waiting for the river here

I will be calling for time behind the loving door
Where the joy will induce the happy tears in your eyes the more
I feel as if the blood full of deep gratitude is flowing like a river
Since some distant life when we thought we had lost one another

I am returning despite that I will have to walk around in bare foot,
All over this world to meet you the person whom I should
Sufferings are not reserved solely for distant windy and sandy places
But also on house pavements, banana bushes and in nights staying up late

The old grapefruit tree still has snow white flowers, as I remember
When the night is not deep yet, under the moon that just climbs over
My old love is like the old age that is lacking lots of sleep
Where the walking steps touch and stir up the suffering feelings so deep

I am returning as a mysterious and mystical dream
Going back to youthful age searching for happy nights so it seems
Where the bright shining moon retains in my soul a burnt patch forever
All my life, the longing will constantly shine without getting dimmer

My little child, together with the old joy and sorrow that are happening
Please try to live and survive, confronting the forgetfulness in containing
The cricket remains the same old cricket to you and me
Who is singing along grassy banks in a voice that sounds so friendly

I am returning as the Buddhist Knowledge Stream that is running
Even the prime star, after ten years, will have its brightness become fading
Among my relatives, who have survived and who have passed away?
In my current living, I feel the emptiness more certain than in those days

Those that have been dead accompany me to the grave together
In those sad nights, who else stands on the pond’s edge mulling over
I am crying for others as I am crying for my being fallen and faded away
When being at the age of seniority, fast is the diminishing day after day

I am returning like a ghost shadow in sulking and in a self-pity situation
Who minutely search for time, for the image of self-reflection
I am picking up each discarded item feeling the love for each of them
Like every skeleton that will soon become anonymous as the time comes

I am sitting here on the place of the heritage hall’s ancient foundation
Rereading the poem that has been composed since my youth portion
Feeling that someone within my soul is sobbing emotionally
Like the moon crescent that is still missing the playful stroll regrettably

I am returning like a golden crane that is deep in the missing
Of the time when in the world was he gracefully flying and gliding
I am regretful that my life is constricted and limited so undesirably
That I can only open my heart for others to see partially not wholly

Màu Tím Hoa Sim( Hữu Loan) - The Purple Colour of Downy Rose Myrtle Flower ( Hương Cau Cao Tân)

Mầu Tím Hoa Sim

Nàng có ba người anh đi bộ đội
Những em nàng có em chưa biết nói
Khi tóc nàng xanh xanh
***
Tôi người Vệ-Quốc-Quân xa gia đình
Yêu nàng như tình yêu em gái
Ngày hợp-hôn nàng không đòi may áo mới
Tôi mặc đồ quân-nhân đôi giày đinh bết bùn đất hành quân
Nàng cười xinh-xinh bên anh chồng độc-đáo
Tôi ở đơn-vị về cưới nhau xong là đi
***
Từ chiến-khu xa nhớ về ái-ngại
Lấy chồng đời chiến-binh mấy người đi trở lại!
Nhỡ khi mình không về thì thương
người vợ chờ bé-bỏng chìều quê
***
***
Ai hát vô-tình hay ác-ý với nhau
Chiều hoang tím có chiều hoang biết
Chiều hoang tím tím thêm màu da-diết...
Nhìn áo rách vai tôi hát trong mầu hoa:
“Áo anh sứt chỉ đường tà
Vợ anh mất sớm...!”
Mầu tím hoa sim tím tình tang lệ rớm...
***
Ráng vàng ma và sừng rúc điệu quân-hành
Vang-vọng chập-chờn theo bóng những binh-đoàn
Biền-biệt hành-binh vào thăm-thẳm chiều hoang mầu tím...
***
Tôi ví vọng về đâu
Tôi với vọng về đâu?
-- áo anh nát chỉ dù ... lâu!

The Purple Colour of Downy Rose Myrtle Flower by Huu Loan

She has three brothers who joined the army
Some of her younger brothers have not learned to speak properly
While her long hair is still black and shiny
***
I, a National Guard, who have been away from my own family
Who love her as much as I do my younger sister, and as dearly
She does not insist on wearing a new dress on her wedding day
I am in my army uniform, with muddy shoes from missions far away
She smiles prettily, standing beside the husband who looks so interesting
I, having returned from my company, depart again right after the wedding
***
From the distant battle zones, I think of her with great concern
Marrying a soldier in war time, who can guarantee for his own return!
If, by chance, my return could not come to be
Then what a pity for the little wife who stays back, waiting in the country
***
But death does not happen to the man living in the fury of the battlefront
But it does to the tiny girl who lives in the rear region
I could not see her face in my homecoming
My mother sits beside her grave while darkness is covering
The vase in wedding day becomes the incense bowl, in a coldness so deadly
While her hair, not yet a full bun, is still black and shiny
Alas, my love! I cannot hear your dying whispering the last time
Nor can I see your lovely face only for the last time...
***
She used to love, with all her heart, the purple downy rose myrtle flower
She wore no other colours except the downy rose myrtle flower’s colour
She used to stay up late under the light of a little oil lamp by herself
To mend her husband’s old shirt so he could be looking well!
***
One rainy day, her three brothers in the Northeast battlefront far away
Receive the news of her passing away before that of her wedding day!
While the autumn winds ruffle the surface of the home river
The growing little brother looks strangely at his sister’s picture
Autumn winds blow; the grass at her stele’s bottom becomes yellower!
The afternoon operation passes the hills full of downy rose myrtle flowers
Oh those hills full of downy rose myrtle flowers
Hills full of downy rose myrtle flowers that are furthest and endless
The flower’s purple colour makes you feel the blue the deepest...
Someone recites the old proverb as if it is in a song’s rhyme:
“My shirt has the threads loosened at the hem for so long a time
I am not yet married, and my old mother has not mended it for some time”
***
Who knows whether the proverb is sung unintentionally, or intentionally
Only a desolate afternoon appreciates a blue purple afternoon fully
O purple, the colour of which deepens as the tormenting lovesick colour...
Looking at the shoulder-torn shirt, I sing against the colour of the flowers:
“My shirt has the threads loosened at the hem for so long a time
My wife has passed away at early age for some time...!”
The purple colour of the downy rose myrtle flower still makes me cry...
***
Ghostly golden clouds are on the skyline and the sound of a horn’s march
Echoing, flickering, and shadowing the companies of army who depart
Away for operations into a deepest purple afternoon, as it is in your heart...
Where can I recite the proverb to?
And where and who can I reach to?
--- My shirt’s threads have broken ... for so long too!

Màu Nắng Mới

Mưa nắng chan hòa lẳng lặng nghe
Úc châu phượng tím bước vào hè
Sang mùa thầm đợi mừng Năm Mới
Ngóng mãi trông hoài chẳng bóng ve
Ve hỡi mây trời dệt mộng mơ
Thời gian tích tắc đủ mong chờ
Không gian xích lại cho thêm nhớ
Thời khắc phượng về tím ngẩn ngơ

The Colour Of New Sunshine
by Kim Phượng

Translated from Vietnamese into English by Hương Cau Cao Tân in Canada
In the mixing of rain and shine I am listening attentively and quietly
To the coming in summer of the Australian purple royal Poinciana trees
As seasons are transitioning I quietly wait to welcome the New Year
And expect eagerly in vain for the figures of cicadas that would come here
O cicadas, the sky’s clouds are weaving the dreams all over
As time is ticking patiently enough for the wait forever
The space seems to be squeezed together to increase the missing
As the purple Poinciana trees’ timing return to deeply daze the bewildering

Mơ Hoa

Nghìn đêm thắp nến tình nhân ấy
Những đóa nồng nàn tỏa khóm cây
Dìu dịu hương đêm tuồng quấn quýt
Thầm mơ vui thú phút sum vầy

Flower Dreaming
by Kim Phượng on Valentine’s Day 2022

Lighting those Valentine candles for a thousand nights
The intensely scented blooms pervades the tree bushes in sight
The lightly night fragrance seems to be willing to entwine
While I am dreaming silently about the moment of reunion time

Searching Eagerly For A Whole Life Through
by Kim Phượng

We have spent a lifetime to tiringly search for each other
And to join our sorrows together by dipping in the farewell river
The cord of the previous predestined love can no longer be for finding
Our souls wander, our first love dream lost and feel the stomach burning

We’ve been searching for each other on all roads where people passing by
Until our hearts wither and in old age and at young time they die
We are gradually wearing out with nightly shadow searching
To be now dreaming now sobering yet our souls are still sleep walking

The road of life has hitches and is mysteriously darkened
While the heart is yearning for the prison of blind passions
In ravine and mountainous areas we are searching for each other earnestly
As it is empty on four sides we feel the heart so sorrowfully

Yet in the misty darkness that is vast in its immensity
The loving words are urging us to escape from the suffering circle earnestly
The resounding voice of previous time still sounds so sweetly
Reminding us of the time when love was given over so totally and fully

Oh my lover, are you here and are you around
To the end and on joined wings let me follow you on the clouds
Yet as I scan near and far over the areas of layers of mountains
I am astounded as I can only see a totally desolate and empty region

A sorrowful tree is having dreamily illusionary fruits in its giving
An old shadow is what I am to have in my unfading worshipping
I am searching for you continuously as day by day is passing by
I hope and have faith as I am constantly missing the old friend of mine

The distant person has suddenly become so close as if beside me
As in the first time of acquaintance I feel fretty and unsettled naturally
And in raising the wicks of the lamps at night so many times
Alas, it is only a simple dream, yet mine has not yet materialized

As a lifetime is so fragile and is only a fleeting moment
I vow that I will search for my other half in my wholesome intention
Minding not the vast oceans and high mountains in regard to you
Since searching means searching eagerly for a whole life through
